Dr. Robert Marx is an Orthopedic Surgeon at HSS and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is Vice Chair of Orthopedic Surgery for faculty development at HSS. Dr. Marx has extensive experience in knee and shoulder surgery, with particular interest in ACL surgery, complex knee ligament reconstruction, and knee replacement. He has been voted as one of the “Best Doctors in New York” by New York Magazine for multiple years. Dr. Marx is the Head Consulting Orthopedic Surgeon for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and The Juilliard School as well as a Team Physician for the New York Rangers.  

After graduating Université de Montréal with a BSc, Dr. Marx went on to medical school at McGill University, also in Montréal, Québec, Canada, and then completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. During his residency, Dr. Marx completed an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology, also at the University of Toronto. After his residency he was a sports medicine fellow for two years at HSS, focusing on knee and shoulder surgery.  

Dr. Marx has published over 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles and six books, including three relating to ACL injury and surgery. He is a Senior Associate Editor for the HSS Journal: The Musculoskeletal Journal of Hospital for Special Surgery.  

Dr. Marx has been invited to lecture at many academic institutions around the world, including Harvard University and the Mayo Clinic. He serves on the Executive Board of Directors of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) as Second-Vice President and will serve as ISAKOS President for the 2027-2029 term.

Visiting surgeons from around the world travel to New York to observe Dr. Marx in the operating room. He also treats patients from across North America and overseas who travel to HSS specifically for their surgery. Dr. Marx enjoys speaking French with his international patients and colleagues.

Dr. Marx sees patients in Manhattan and the HSS Westchester outpatient center. Additionally, he operates at the Main Hospital at 535 East 70th Street and at HSS ASC of Manhattan located at 1233 2nd Avenue (and 65th Street).

Dr. Marx has also authored a textbook on ACL injury prevention, a book on ACL surgery, another on revision ACL reconstruction, a textbook on bone tumors, as well as a book on methods for orthopedic clinical research.

Research

Dr. Marx is at the forefront of orthopedic research as an investigator and also in his role as Deputy Editor of Sports Medicine for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. In the latter capacity, Dr. Marx reviews manuscripts submitted to the journal and determines suitability for publication based on study strength, novelty of results, clinical impact, and relevance to readers. Dr. Marx is also Associate Editor for Evidence Based Orthopedics for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. In this role, Dr. Marx assigns manuscripts' level of evidence based on study design.  Additionally, on a quarterly basis, he selects impactful randomized clinical trials that have been recently published and invites experts from around the world to write commentaries on these studies.

Dr. Marx's research interests are knee surgery. He has published extensively with the multicenter initiatives Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) and Multicenter ACL Revision Study (MARS) looking at predictors of outcome following ACL reconstruction and revision ACL reconstruction, respectively.

Dr. Marx received the 2014 and 2017 O'Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award presented by AOSSM for studies outcomes after ACL reconstruction, as well as the effect of graft choice on revision ACL reconstruction outcomes. He also received the 2013 Excellence in Research Award presented by the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) for his development and validation of a pediatric sports activity rating scale.

Dr. Marx has received many peer-reviewed research grants. He was awarded The ISAKOS Clinical Outcomes Grant to study how to implement ACL injury prevention programs. Additionally, Dr. Marx was awarded a four million dollar, five year grant as a lead investigator for a study of outcomes after joint replacement surgery, funded by the United States government (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality). He has also received funding from the NIH for clinical studies on knee arthroscopy for meniscal tears as well as for outcomes of ACL surgery.
